Biography

Macchiarole was a close associate of gambling Czar and Genovese family capo Jimmy Napoli. Macchiarole operated in Miami, Florida, New York and New Jersey. Macchiarole was also linked to Florida based Lucchese crime family soldier John Cerrella. Macchiarole owned a liquor-licensed establishment in New York that was a front for his criminal activities. He was also a mob loanshark and owned a freight company in Jersey City. Macchiarole had links to the New Jersey longshoreman unions and to Edwin Siegel, who owned a check cashing business on the New Jersey waterfront. In the 1970s, Macchiarole was indicted based on the testimony of Conrad Greaves, a 39 year old Queens nightclub owner who had been a key witness in a grand jury investigation of organized crime. In March of 1972, Greaves was found murdered. It was believed that the shooting death of Greaves, was in retaliation for his testimony which resulted in the indictment of 'Paddy Mac' Macchiarole.

In the late 1970s, Jimmy Napoli was indicted on gambling and racketeering charges along with many of his criminal associates. Soon after many of these men would begin to turn up murdered. Among them were Gambino family members Carmine and Frank Consalvo, who were both thrown off buildings or out their windows and killed. Authorities dubbed it 'The Murder Of The Flying Consalvos'. Another gambling operator called JJ Frankel was also killed.

On, March 23, 1978 Macciarole's body was found in the trunk of his new Lincoln Continental alongside the Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn. He had been shot in the head multiple times.

Two months later, Macchiarole's son John was also killed gangland-style. The 33 year old John, was killed just a few days before Carmine Galante was murdered and Police at the time believed there may have been a link between the two mob slayings, this later turned out to be false. A collector for Macchiarole was also found murdered in the trunk of his car a few weeks after his son John's death.

Aftermath

It has never been clearly established why Paddy Macchiarole was killed although one theory suggests that he and 'Sally Bugs' Salvatore Briguglio (killed 21 march 1978 two days before Macchiarelo turned up murdered) had tried to take over Local 560 while powerful Genovese family capo Anthony Provenzano was facing legal proceedings and were both killed for crossing him. While others believe Macchiarole was killed on the orders of members of his own crime family in relation to the Napoli gambling operation indictments. Another underworld source however, indicated that 'Paddy Mac' was killed because of his big mouth, and his habit of belittling Genovese mob boss Funzi Tieri.

Government witness, Peter Savino would later testify that Macchiarole's murderer was Salvatore 'Sally Dogs' Lombardi.
